Fall for These Moves

Fall is here! Take a deep breath as the air gets cooler. Pause for a bit of reflection on the summer, then keep it moving! Movement is helpful for all bodies and minds, and play is important for both kids and adults. Keep reading for some fun ways to move around this fall.

Fall is known for apples, pumpkins, pears, and more! Have some fun with the harvests of the season by moving with them.

  • Pick ‘em!
Pretend Apple Picking – reach up high to the sky to pick some of the best apples you can find. Then, squat down low to place them in your basket.

Pretend Pumpkin Picking squat down low to pick up the biggest pumpkin. Join our friends in this video to pick the best pumpkins.

  • Make it a Game
Toss – using a real or pretend fall fruit or vegetable (apple, small pumpkin, gourd), toss it to your partner. After a few turns,
move farther apart to make it harder.

Relay – mix movement with learning, and collect all of the fruits, vegetables, or leaves of one color or size. What other colors and shapes can you find - inside or outside?

Pick Your Own – check out this link for any opportunities to pick fruits in your area– apples, pumpkins, pears, and more!

Enjoy the cooler weather. Get the whole family outside!

  • Family walks or bike rides - invite family members to join.
  • Involve your pets – bring them on your walks or outdoor activities as you are able.
  • Corn maze – visit a local corn maze, or set up your own at home with cushions, blankets, chairs, or whatever else you can find.
  • Raking leaves - head outside to rake and gather them up, or pretend like our friends in this video.
  • Nature scavenger hunt – take your adventure outside to look for creatures, colors, shapes, sounds, and smells. Or design your own for an indoor adventure.

Celebrate!
Celebrate Halloween with your own spooky trail or play Halloween hopscotch by replacing your hopscotch squares with paper pumpkins. Thanksgiving is a great opportunity to take a walk with your family after your meal. It’s a great time to enjoy each other’s company and be active.

Remember!
  • Dress for the weather – wear layers of clothing to adjust to different temperatures.
  • Sun protection – the sun is still shining bright! Use sunscreen or clothing to cover up.
