Apples and pears are two of the few fruits are in season during mid-to late Fall in Maryland. As you can likely tell by their look, feel, and taste, apples and pears are in the same plant family (Fun fact: they are in the rose family!). Both are great sources of fiber and vitamin C. Here are some ways you can enjoy these fall fruits!
Mix them Up
Apples and pears can be easily chopped, sliced, and diced. Toss them in a salad with leafy greens, nuts and other raw veggies. Finish your salad with a low-fat dressing. Use some of the applesauce you make to swap for half of the butter in your cakes, cookies, or muffins for a neat way to cut down on fat. Pair apples with a fall vegetable, such as sweet potato or acorn squash, for a great side dish at your next family meal!

With skin that you can eat, apples and pears make a great on-the-go snack. Wash with water and take a bite! Slice up the fruit and dip into peanut butter for extra protein and energy. Mix some vanilla low-fat yogurt with a pinch of cinnamon or pumpkin spice for a fall-flavored dip.

Apples and pears can stay fresh for weeks if you store them well. Put apples in a bag and keep them in the fridge for up to 3 weeks. Pears can be left in a bowl on the counter for up to 2 weeks. Once they get soft, they can be stored in the fridge.
